Adventure Challenge
This adventure challenge is designed to bring your squad closer together and get you to explore the surrounding area while staying safe and healthy. Please follow the current CDC guidelines and your local authorities for the best ways to protect yourselves and those in your community.
Here Are The Rules
Read each challenge carefully and click on any provided links to view helpful pictures, videos, and requirements for each challenge.
Complete as many challenges as you can in the given time frame. Challenges can be completed in any order. Challenges are often designed to bring you together through fun, difficult, or embarrassing experiences, so complete whatever challenges you and your group are comfortable with. Just be sure to create some unforgettable moments and content that your group will cherish forever!
Some challenges may require a few basic supplies to complete them. Figuring out how to obtain these supplies somewhere in the area is part of the strategy so work together and use what you’ve got to get what you need.
Team members need to stay together throughout the adventure, however, if you are all at the same location and searching for an item you can spread out until it is found and then regroup to take the necessary picture/video.
Capture as many team members in your picture or video as possible. When out in the community, teams often ask a kind stranger to take their picture or video so that the entire team can get on film. If it's necessary to have someone on your own team film certain challenges be sure to rotate who that person is so that everyone is actively involved in completing challenges throughout the adventure.
#1: West Chester is an important and historical place for those that love books. It was the site of the first published biography of Abraham Lincoln, which is said to have propelled him to the presidency. To honor this towns’ role in the start of something powerful, get your team to Baldwin Book Barn and search among their nearly 300,000 titles for any book with the word “Family” in it’s title. Then take a picture of your team holding the book and flexing your muscles, to show there’s nothing more powerful than family.
#2: Today is National Flossing Day (it’s true, look it up). Get your team outside of any dentist office in the area and find any youth (or group of youth) nearby that can help lead your team in this challenge. Even if you have youth team members you’ll need to recruit at least one who is not on your team. Then take a video of them teaching your team members how to “Floss”. And no, it has nothing to do with your teeth, it’s a dance move.
#3: Get your team to the plaque that marks the site of the first schoolhouse in West Chester. It was used as a hospital for American wounded after the Battle of Brandywine. Once there, designate one of your teammates as an “injured soldier”. Then take a picture demonstrating the “correct way to carry an injured soldier”, as referenced in the picture found HERE by soldiers from the 1800’s. If you have a lot of people on your team you can divide up and carry multiple “victims”, or if you have a small team you can recruit strangers to help out if needed. Make sure to capture some of your surroundings in the background so that it can be verified you’re at the correct historical location.
#4: Get your team to the replica Harry Potter secret location shown HERE. Once there take a memorable team picture reenacting one of your team members getting a spell placed on them.
#5: Located somewhere around the area, find the sad tree shown HERE and get your team to that location. Once there, take a memorable picture with the tree while every team member is making their silliest face in an attempt to cheer him up.
#6: Take a team picture with any parked vehicle that has a license plate which contains numerical digits that add up to 10, no more, no less. So if the plate were "CF2H 5K3" it would be acceptable because those numbers add up to 10 and there aren't any additional numbers.
#7: Take a picture of your team while an old fashioned barber pole is visible in the background. It will likely be a staff or pole with a helix of colored stripes and might be stationary or revolve. To view an example of a valid barber pole and learn the history of them click HERE.
#8: Anywhere around the area take a team picture with any public digital clock (not a cell phone or personal watch) when the digits add up to 12. For example, 11:46am would be acceptable because 1+1+4+6=12. Similarly, 5:07pm would also be acceptable, or any other time where the sum of the individual digits equals 12.
#9: Anywhere around town take a team picture with any regulation street name sign that would be considered an “alliteration”, or two consecutive words that start with the same letter. It could be a road that starts with R, a street that starts with S, an avenue that starts with A, a lane that starts with L, and so on. For example, Adventure Avenue would be accepted but Adventure Road would not. If the street name has a direction at the beginning of it (such as NW or SE) then you can disregard that and focus on the actual name.
#10: Take a video of your team completing "Stop, Drop, and Roll" in front of any working fire station, or while any regulation/operable fire extinguisher is visible in the background. Be sure to yell each step of the fire safety technique as you all do it together and make sure the fire station or extinguisher is clearly visible at some point in your video.
#11: Take a picture of your team with any grave that has the same first name of any of the four Beatles members (doesn't have to be spelled exactly the same).
#12: Get to any clothing or apparel store and find two different items with enough in stock that every team member can be wearing the same two items in their own sizes. Then take a fun team picture with everyone wearing those items. For example it may be a wacky shirt, and a pair of shorts. Or maybe some cozy slippers and a large sun hat. As long as everyone is wearing the same exact two items but in their own sizes.
#13: Take a picture of your entire team all completing any variation of the "Tree Pose" in front of any Yoga studio/facility. If the location doesn't have yoga in their name they should at least have signage out front or on the window promoting that they offer it. To view a picture of someone properly performing a variation of the Tree Pose click HERE.
#14: Southeastern Pennsylvania has created some legendary music and bands over the years, and fans from this area never hesitate to get behind the groups they love. This challenge will have you “get behind” some more iconic artists, literally. Get to any local record store or browse your own albums at home and take a fun picture creating “SleeveFace” illusions with any album sleeves that are conducive for creating this effect. To learn what a SleeveFace illusion is and to see some examples click HERE.
#15: Get to any business in the area with the word “Pie” in it’s name. Once there, take a video of your team while everyone closes their eyes and in unison slowly recites the first 12 digits of Pi from memory without anyone else assisting you. Make sure a sign for the business is visible at some point in your video. Just as a helpful tip, the number 8 is typically considered to be the 12th digit of Pi. If anyone makes a mistake, encourage them, and have the entire team start again.
#16: For this challenge you have two options. Option #1 is to get your team to the Delaware County Veterans Memorial, located at 4599 West Chester Pike in Newtown Square. Once there take a video of your team all doing 10 push-ups or sit-ups with the memorial in the background to honor the strength of those that have served. Option #2 is to find an active military person or veteran anywhere around the West Chester area . Then take a video of them watching your entire team doing 10 push-ups or sit-ups at their feet to honor their courage. After you’ve finished recording, spend a few minutes learning more about their time in the service before you depart, as a small gesture of appreciation.
#17: Get your team outside of the American Helicopter Museum. Once there, have someone take a picture of your team with any of the massive helicopters behind you while everyone is jumping in the air and high-fiving at the same time. Work together as a team, and with the photographer, to try and time your jump perfectly to create a true lift off effect.
#18: Anywhere around the area find a life-size statue of a human and take a fun team picture with the statue reacting wildly as if you’ve just met your longtime icon, childhood crush, or arch enemy.
#19: QVC, short for "Quality Value Convenience" is probably the best known business started here in West Chester. This flagship shopping channel broadcasts to more than 350 million households in seven countries. Get to their facility and find the QVC logo anywhere on the premises. Once there, honor West Chester’s place in shopping history by taking a video of at least half the members in your group completing the "Bite The Bag" challenge. Stand on one leg, bend down and grab a brown paper bag with your teeth and lift it up as you stand back up on one foot. Must remain on one foot the entire time and can not use your arms, hold onto anything, or bump into anything else. To watch a video of someone successfully completing this challenge click HERE.
#20: Find a postcard that features this area in some way or a greeting card designed by a local artist and purchase it. Then click HERE to go to the Postcard Happiness Project website and scroll down to the profile for John Craig, an adult with Downs Syndrome from Oregon that loves to receive mail. On your postcard include a fun or uplifting message and sign it with your names or your group name. The mailing address for John can be found in his profile description. Stamp your card and take a picture with it to show you've completed your Act Of Kindness.
